Upgrading a FAS250

to a Disk Shelf in a Modular System

About these instructions

These instructions describe how to upgrade the FAS250 to a disk shelf and attach it to either an F825 or a FAS900 modular system. This is a five-step process:

Assumptions about the upgrade

This procedure assumes the following:

  • You are adding the converted FAS250 to a factory-new modular system.
  • The converted FAS250 shelf is installed as shelf N+1 on the FAS900, where N is the last disk shelf attached to the FAS900.
  • You use the root volume on the converted FAS250 as the system root volume.
  • Final network settings, IP addresses, and other settings are from the FAS250.
  • You ordered copper LRC/ESH modules in the FAS250-to-DS14mk2 conversion kit.

Required components

The following list specifies the software, firmware, kits, and manuals you need to complete upgrading:

  • Data ONTAPTM 6.4.1 software or later
Caution: The FAS250 and the F800 or FAS900 must be running the same version level of Data ONTAP, but each appliance must be running the version designed for it.
  • Filer firmware OFW 4.1_i2 or later for the F825 or FAS900
  • Filer firmware CFE 1.0.0 or later for the FAS250
  • FAS250-to-DS14mk2 conversion kit
  • FAS900 Series Hardware and Service Guide, if applicable
  • F800 Hardware Guide and the F800 Field Service Guide, if applicable
  • FAS250 Series Hardware and Service Guide
  • Software Setup Guide
  • Data ONTAP Upgrade Guide
  • DiskShelf14 and DiskShelf14mk2 FC Hardware Guide

Preparing the FAS250 for upgrade

Process of preparing for the upgrade

Preparing the FAS250 for upgrade is a three-step process:

Installing the F825 or FAS900

To install the F825 or FAS900 system, complete the following steps.

Step Action
1 Install the filer in the equipment rack or system cabinet, as described in the appropriate hardware and service guide.
2 Install the disk shelves, as described in the DiskShelf14 and DiskShelf14mk2 FC Hardware Guide.
3 Check the Media Kit that came with the system and compare it to the version of Data ONTAP installed on the FAS250.
4 Check the motherboard firmware level and update it, if needed.
5

If the Data ONTAP version is...
Then...
The same revision level or later Go to Step 6.
An earlier revision level
  1. Turn on the disk shelves and then the filer, and complete the setup script using the appropriate network addresses.
  2. Download the same revision level of Data ONTAP as is installed on the FAS250; go to http://now.netapp.com/NOW/main/software.shtml.
  3. From the admin host, extract the files and install them on the system with the following commands:
tar xvf /mnt/ filename
install_netapp .

Note: In a Windows® environment, you must unzip the files and run setup.exe. See the Software Setup Guide for more information.

  1. Download the installed image to the CompactFlashTM card by entering the following command:
download
  1. Shut down the system and power it off.
6 Go to Updating Data ONTAP on the FAS250.

Updating Data ONTAP on the FAS250

You might need to update Data ONTAP on the FAS250 to match the revision level of the F825 or FAS900 before changing any hardware on the system. Both the FAS250 and the F825/F900 must be running the same version of Data ONTAP.

To update Data ONTAP on the FAS250, complete the following steps.

Step Action
1 Check the Media Kit that came with the modular system packaging for the version of Data ONTAP installed on the FAS900.
2

If the Data ONTAP version is...
Then...
The same revision level or later  Go to Step 3.
An earlier  revision level
  1. Download the same version level of Data ONTAP from http://now.netapp.com/NOW/main/software.shtml.
  2. From the admin host, extract the files and install them with the following commands:
tar xvf /mnt/ filename
install_netapp .

Note: In a Windows environment, you must unzip the files and run setup.exe. See the Software Setup Guide for more information.

Caution: Do not reboot the FAS250.

  1. Download the installed image to the CompactFlash card by entering the following command:
download
3 Reboot the system by entering the following command:
reboot
4

Enter the following command at the FAS250 console:

halt
5 Turn off the power and disconnect the system from the power source, then remove the cabling from the system.
6 Go to Converting the hardware.

Converting the hardware

To convert the FAS250 hardware, complete the following steps, using the illustrations for reference.

Step Action
1 While grounded, remove the CPU module and blank filer module from the back of the FAS250.
 2

Insert the LRC/ESH modules into the FAS250, with the bottom LRC/ESH right side up and the top LRC/ESH module upside down.

Note: The LRC/ESH modules are keyed and can only be inserted one way.
 3

If the last disk shelf has...
Then...
LRCs Set the converted FAS250 disk shelf loop speed to 1 Gb.
ESHs Set the converted FAS250 disk shelf loop speed to the same setting as the last disk shelf on the FAS900.
4 Replace the bezel by completing the steps in the bezel replacement kit flyer.
5 Go to Completing the upgrade.

Completing the upgrade

Process for completing the upgrade

Completing the upgrade is a two-step process:

Installing the upgraded disk shelf

To complete the upgrade by installing the converted FAS250, complete the following steps.

Step Action
1

Cable the FAS250, set the disk shelf ID, and set the terminate switches, as described in the DiskShelf14 and DiskShelf14mk2 FC Hardware Guide.

2

Reconnect the system to the power source, power on the disk shelves, and then power on the filer and complete the setup script, if needed.

3

Check the volume status by entering the following command:

vol status

Note: The volumes on the converted FAS250 are displayed as offline. The root volume is displayed as vol0(1), if you use the default volume names. Your root volume might be named differently.

4

Rename the root volume on the FAS900 disk shelf to old_vol0, by entering the following command:

vol rename vol0 old_vol0

5

Rename the FAS250 root volume to vol0 by completing the following procedure:

  1. Bring the root volume online by entering the following command:
vol online vol0(1)
  1. Rename the volume to a temporary name, then back to the correct name, by entering the following commands:
vol rename vol0(1) vol1
vol rename vol1 vol0

 6

Set the renamed volume from the FAS250 to the root volume by entering the following command:

vol options vol0 root

7

Reboot the system by entering the following command from the console:

reboot

8

The MIPS binaries still reside in the root volume of the converted FAS250. You must download and install the FAS900 version of Data ONTAP to get the correct binaries on the disks.

Install Data ONTAP by completing the following steps:

  1. Download Data ONTAP from the NOW site.
  2. Extract the files by entering the following command:
tar xvf /mnt/ filename
  1. Install the untarred file by entering the following command:
install_netapp .

Note: In a Windows environment, you must unzip the files and run setup.exe .

 9

Download the image to the CompactFlash card by entering the following command:

download
10

Reboot the system.

11

If the data in the old root volume is not needed, you can remove it.

Decommissioning the FAS250

The following procedure assumes that you are taking the FAS250 completely out of service and returning it to Network Appliance.

To complete the decommissioning process, complete the following steps.

Step Action
1

Go to the NOW Web site at http://now.netapp.com/.

2

Search for Decommission this System and follow the instructions.

3

Return the FAS250 modules to Network Appliance, as described in the SRA instructions shipped with the conversion kit. Contact Customer Support, at 408-822-6686, if you need the SRA instructions.
